Teaching Philosophy
I believe that great coaching starts with understanding the person in front of you — not just their swing, but their goals, their mindset, and what they want from the game. Since I began coaching in 2009, I've developed a way of explaining the intricacies of the golf swing and the techniques required to successfully manage your way around a golf course. I keep things clear and actionable: every lesson has purpose, and every piece of feedback is something you can take away and actually use. I use TrackMan4 and real-time video analysis at both my venues to ensure every change we make is backed by data, not guesswork. After each session, I send you visual feedback and drill reminders so the work continues long after you leave. I try to tailor my approach to what you need — whether that's a small refinement to your long game, short game help, or a fundamental rebuild. My aim is always to produce a swing you can trust and repeat under pressure over 18 holes. I'm equally passionate about junior development, running structured level-based programmes that have helped young players set course records, earn international caps, and secure US college golf scholarships. Whether you're picking up a club for the first time or competing at a high level, I'd love to be part of your journey.
About the coach
I'm a PGA Advanced Professional with over 16 years of full-time coaching experience, based in the Scottish Borders and Northumberland. I turned professional in 2009 and became a fully qualified PGA Professional in 2011, going on to serve as Club Professional at Hirsel Golf Club from 2016 before committing to coaching full-time in January 2024.
I coach from two outstanding venues: my custom-built TrackMan4 studio at Putton Mill Driving Range near Duns, and the award-winning Open Qualifying Venue at Goswick Golf Club near Berwick-upon-Tweed. Both locations are equipped for the full range of coaching — from short game and on-course playing lessons to data-driven swing analysis with the latest technology.
My student roster spans every level of the game — complete beginners, club golfers looking to break 90, elite amateurs competing in the US, and capped Scottish Internationalists. Junior development is a particular passion of mine: my structured Level 1 and Level 2 junior programmes have grown from nothing to over 50 children, and I've been fortunate to see talented juniors go on to win club championships at 14, earn Scotland caps, and secure US golf scholarships.
As a competitor, I won the Insch Pro-Am in 2011 and the Matfen Hall PGA Pro-Am in 2022, with seven Top 5 PGA event finishes along the way — experience that directly shapes how I coach and connect with golfers who want to compete. I coach golfers from all over the world and offer both in-person sessions and online lessons for those who can't make it to the Scottish Borders. I'd love to help you unlock your potential.
