Teaching Philosophy
I don’t begin with a picture of what your golf swing should look like. I begin with questions. What are you experiencing? What are you trying to accomplish? What happens when things go well? What changes when they don’t? From there, we’ll observe, explore, and test ideas together. I think of the golf swing as movement unfolding over time rather than a collection of positions to reproduce. Mechanics matter, but so do the relationships between movement, skill, intent, rhythm, previous experience, physical capabilities, and what you’re noticing. Sometimes an idea works immediately. Sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes changing one thing reveals something else entirely. That’s useful information. My role isn’t to make you dependent on me to interpret every golf shot. Good coaching should gradually help you become a better observer of your own game—to recognize patterns, experiment intelligently, and better understand what you’re experiencing. About the coach
I’m Dan Houle, founder and head coach of FUNCTIONAL.GOLF in Ottawa, Canada.
I’ve coached golfers for more than 16 years, from complete beginners to accomplished competitive players. My education has taken me through golf mechanics and biomechanics, human movement, breathing, performance, motor learning, and the psychological dimensions of sport.
Some of my most important education, however, continues to happen where it always has: standing beside golfers.
Since December 2024, I’ve used Skillest to record and document more than 500 individual coaching sessions. Students can return to their session videos, observations, conversations, and recaps to revisit what we’ve explored and see how their game has evolved over time.
Skillest also allows the coaching conversation to travel. Students sometimes share swings from practice, questions between sessions, or observations while playing far from Ottawa. I also use the platform to work entirely remotely with golfers wherever they practice and play.
Whether we work together in person or remotely, Skillest helps create something I value enormously: an ongoing record of the golfer’s coaching journey.
