Teaching Philosophy
My coaching philosophy begins with one simple principle: every golfer is unique, and your lessons should reflect that. I look at the needs of each individual player from a swing perspective and where they reside on the overall swing spectrum. Some players need improved geometry and reduced degrees of freedom; others need greater athleticism and freedom of movement. There is no one-size-fits-all answer, and I've never believed in cookie-cutter instruction. After more than three decades working with golfers at every level — from first-timers to Tour winners — I've learned that lasting improvement comes from blending technical precision with an understanding of the mental and physical demands of the game. I use the very best technology available, including Trackman, Boditrak, HackMotion, Capto, and Sportsbox AI, not to overwhelm students with data, but to give us clarity. Why guess when you can measure? Above all, I want every golfer I work with to leave the lesson with confidence — knowing exactly what to work on, why it matters, and how to make it stick. Whether you're chasing a Tour card or just trying to break 90, my goal is the same: to help you play better golf and enjoy this game more.
About the coach
I'm a PGA Fellow Professional with over three decades of international coaching experience and a passion for transforming golfers at every level of the game. South African-born and globally shaped, my career has taken me from the flagship David Leadbetter Academy in Spain to the Els Performance Academy in Asia, where I served as Academy Director and worked alongside elite players from around the world. Those years sharpened my coaching eye, deepened my understanding of what it truly takes to develop a golfer, and reinforced my belief that world-class instruction should be available to everyone.
I now operate VderbergGolf, and in that time I've delivered over 40,000 lessons — a number that reflects not just volume, but an unwavering commitment to continuous improvement. I've had the privilege of coaching over 50 Tour professionals, including winners on the DP World Tour, Sunshine Tour, and Asian Tour, as well as 12 National Amateur Champions and players who have competed on the grandest stages in the game, including The Open Championship.
My coaching is built on the latest technology — Trackman, Capto, HackMotion, Boditrak, and more — paired with certifications that reflect a lifelong pursuit of knowledge, including TPI Expert, Scott Cowx Master Certified, Golfing Machine/MORAD, and Lynn Blake Senior Instructor. I also bring that expertise online, delivering structured, personalised video lessons to students anywhere in the world.
Whether you're a beginner picking up a club for the first time or an elite amateur targeting your Tour card, I bring the same energy, precision, and genuine care to every session. Let's get to work.
