Teaching Philosophy
I believe that great golf starts long before you ever swing the club. In my lessons, I always begin with the pre-swing fundamentals — proper grip, stance, aim, balance, posture, alignment, and ball position — because without that foundation, even the best swing thoughts won't stick. From there, my approach is rooted in helping each student truly understand the 'cause and effect' of what's happening in their swing. When you understand why something is going wrong, you have the power to fix it yourself on the course, not just on the lesson tee. I've always seen myself as more of a coach and mentor than simply a teacher. My job isn't just to hand you information — it's to make sure you actually absorb it, own it, and can apply it under pressure. Because everyone processes information differently, I use a combination of video analysis, customized drills, visual aids, and in-person feedback to meet each student where they are. Real improvement requires a commitment to practice, which is why I provide specifically assigned drills and ongoing communication to keep you on track between sessions. Most importantly, I want golf to be fun. After more than 25 years in this game — as a player, caddy, instructor, and coach — I know that the golfers who enjoy the process are the ones who improve the fastest. Whether you're picking up a club for the very first time or chasing a competitive goal, I'm here to give you the tools, the confidence, and the encouragement to achieve every golfing goal you set.
About the coach
I'm a PGA Class A Professional and the Owner & Lead Instructor of Stevens Golf Academy, based at River View Golf Course in Santa Ana, California. I've been in the golf business since 1997 — starting out as a player and caddy before growing into roles as instructor, coach, mentor, Head Golf Professional, Director of Golf, and Director of Instruction at both private and public courses throughout Southern California.
I joined the PGA of America in 2007 and have since built a reputation as one of the most dedicated and versatile golf coaches in the region. Over the course of my career, I've delivered more than 25,000 lessons to golfers of every background — from complete beginners stepping onto a course for the first time, to competitive junior players, collegiate athletes, and touring professionals. I'm certified through the PGA's American Development Model (ADM), First Tee of America, US Kids Golf, and Golf Squad, and I serve as Director of Instruction for the PGA Junior Camps at River View Golf Course.
My coaching covers the full spectrum: in-person lessons, online video analysis with personalized feedback and customized drills, live Zoom check-ins, and hybrid packages that combine the best of both worlds. I'm also a former college and mini-tour player myself, which means I understand the game from the inside out — not just the mechanics, but the mental and strategic side too.
