Teaching Philosophy

My core belief is simple: I want to help every golfer evolve into the best player — and the best person — they can be. That means I never just look at a swing in isolation. I bring together biomechanics, physics, physiology, performance psychology, and philosophy to understand what each student needs, both technically and as a human being. I studied political science and philosophy at university, and those disciplines genuinely shaped how I see the game. Philosophy taught me to stay open-minded, to challenge assumptions, and to never settle for a single belief system. That mindset is at the heart of everything I do on the range. I believe the swing is a deeply individual expression, but the physical and geometric principles that make it work are universal. My job is to bridge those two realities — to take the science and translate it into something you can feel and repeat under pressure. I work with players at every level, from juniors just starting out to major champions, and the process is fundamentally the same: understand the student, build trust, and give them the tools and awareness to grow independently. I want my students to leave every session understanding why, not just what. When they truly understand the principles behind the movement, they become their own best coach.

About the coach

I'm one of the most recognized golf instructors in the world, and I've built my career on one idea: that great coaching goes far deeper than swing mechanics. Born just outside of Toronto, Canada, I was inspired to pursue teaching when I watched David Leadbetter coach Nick Faldo at the 1988 RBC Canadian Open. That moment ignited a lifelong obsession with the art and science of player development. I went on to play college golf at Tennessee State University, where I majored in political science and philosophy — two disciplines that have profoundly shaped my approach to coaching — and began my teaching career at the legendary Glen Abbey Golf Club in Ontario.

Over the course of my career, I've had the privilege of coaching some of the game's greatest players, including Tiger Woods, Olympic champion Justin Rose, 2016 Masters Champion Danny Willett, two-time LPGA Major winner Lydia Ko, and Cameron Champ, among many others. Together, my students have accumulated over 56 professional victories across tours worldwide. I've been ranked in Golf Digest's top five instructors for over a decade, named to their Top-20 Instructors Under Age 40, twice featured on the cover of Golf Digest, and voted the #1 instructor by PGA TOUR players on two separate occasions.

Today, I operate Sean Foley Performance in Orlando, Florida — a full-time residential academy offering elite golf training alongside a world-class academic experience for junior players, as well as programs for adults and corporate clients. I also serve as a host on NBC's GolfPass and have been a regular contributor to Golf Digest and Golf Channel. Whether I'm working with a Tour winner or an ambitious amateur, my commitment is the same: to bring the highest level of preparation, science, and human understanding to every lesson.

Frequently asked questions

What is an online golf lesson?

An online golf lesson is a way of learning golf skills and techniques from a coach or instructor through the internet, using video analysis, live coaching, or online courses. On Skillest, you can get private instruction with an elite golf coach without even leaving your home. Just record your golf swing and send it to your coach, along with any goals, questions, or other information that will help your coach create the right plan for you.

What are the benefits of an online lesson using Skillest?

Online golf lessons using Skillest offer many benefits, such as convenience, affordability, flexibility, and access to the largest selection of the most talented golf coaches in one place. Through video recordings, side by side comparisons, and conversations you have with your coach, you will receive comprehensive feedback on what you need to improve and how to improve these areas. When you get a lesson on Skillest, you don’t need to schedule a time or drive to your lesson. You can just record your swing and message your coach whenever you have questions.

How do I receive feedback from my coach?

You will receive feedback from your coach through the Skillest app. Your coach will record their own videos with their analysis as well as additional drills to work on and send them back to you inside the lesson. You can watch your coach’s analysis, which may include video, audio, text, or drawings and see the changes and improvements they suggest for your swing. You can also ask your coach follow-up questions you have, and chat with them through the app. You can also review your feedback and track your progress anytime on the app.

What are the different types of lesson plans I can purchase?

Skillest offers a variety of plans and packages available for purchase. You can purchase a single online lesson, lesson packages, monthly subscriptions, or live Zoom lessons. Many coaches also offer video-based courses in addition to one-on-one coaching. Note: Not every coach will offer each type of lesson plan available.
